The diazotization reaction results in the formation of the diazonium product via the formation of nitrous acid. The primary amine (aryl and alkyl) gives the salt, whereas the secondary amine gives the different product.

The diazonium salts can be substituted by the nucleophiles, which eliminate the dinitrogen. The substitution also includes the coupling reaction.

In the first step, the diazonium salt is replaced by the cyanide nucleophile.
