Synthesis of (a)

In this reaction the synthesized cyclic compound is from intramolecular reaction in a same molecule. The reactant of this reaction is a compound that contains benzene with an acyl chloride. Cyclic ketone results by addition of Lewis acid (AlCl₃) to a compound contains benzene with an acyl chloride.By the elimination of chlorine there occurs intramolecular reaction results a five membered ring attached to benzene ring.

Synthesis of (b)

Addition of Lewis acid to a compound contains benzene with an acyl group gives a cyclic compound. The size of the resulted ring is determined from the number of carbons atoms between two reacting groups. Reactant molecule is formed by the Friedel crafts acylation reaction between a benzene ring and an acyl group.Thus, intramolecular reaction results a compound that contains benzene attached to cyclic ketone.

In this reaction intermolecular reaction between a benzene and benzyl chlorine gives the compound phenylmethyl benzene. D
