Benzene converts to the alkyl benzene by reacting with the alkyl chloride in the presence of an aluminum chloride. This reaction is termed as the Friedel Craft’s alkylation.

Benzaldehyde can be synthesized from benzene using the Gatterman-Koch reaction.

The reaction of one equivalent of benzaldehyde with one equivalent of acetone leads to the generation of the alpha-beta unsaturated carbonyl compound through the aldol reaction followed by heat. The ketone converts to the carboxylic acid by sodium hypochlorite.

The further reaction with NaHCO₃ converts it to sodium salt of the carboxylic acid. The alkylation of this sodium salt converts it into an ether. The reagents used for the synthesis are as shown below.
