Q18.25: The atmosphere of the planet Mars is 95.3% carbon dioxideCO2and about 0.03% water vapor. The atmospheric pressure is only about 600 Pa, and the surface temperature varies from -30 °C to -100 °C. The polar ice caps contain bothCO2ice and water ice. Could there be liquidCO2on the surface of Mars? Could there be liquid water? Why or why not?

Short Answer

Expert verified

No, there would not be liquid CO2 on the surface of Mars.

There will not be liquid water also, as a stable state.

Step by step solution

01

Definition of triple point and phase equilibrium

The conditions of pressure and temperature at which solid, liquid and gaseous states coexist is called the triple point.

A phase is stable along a range of temperature and pressure, which act as a transition line across which the phase change do occur. This is called as the phase equilibrium line.

Below the triple point pressure, the liquid state cannot exist. In the figure given, atmospheric pressure of Mars (given as 600 Pa = 0.006 atm ) is labelled. Given, the temperature range of consideration for mars is -30°Cto-100°C.

For each particular compound, there exist specific constant value of triple point pressure and temperature. For all the conditions of atmospheric pressures below the triple point pressure of the compound, the compound either exists as solid, or gas, and not liquid. This is clear from the figure.

02

Cases of carbon dioxide and water vapour

The triple point of carbon dioxide is given in the table 18.3, as 5.17×105Pa=5.17atm.

But the atmospheric pressure of Mars is 0.006atm , which is far less than the triple point (The region included is labelled inside the white circle). This implies that the state in which carbon dioxide is feasible to exist in the pressure of Mars is solid. Thus, they exist as dry ice on Mars.

Similarly, the triple point of water (from table 18.3 ) is0.00610×105Pa=0.00610atm

The atmospheric pressure of Mars is 0.006atm , which is slightly less than the triple point temperature of water. This means, mostly, the liquid state may not exist. But, if there is a rise in atmospheric pressure and temperature, the melting can occur, for ice to become water. That is still an extreme condition. Generally, water does not exist in liquid state, in a stable condition.

Hence, there could not be liquid CO2on the surface of Mars and there could not be liquid water, in a stable state.

Work Done by the Lungs. The graph in Fig. E19.4 shows a pV-diagram of the air in a human lung when a person is inhaling and then exhaling a deep breath. Such graphs, obtained in clinical practice, are normally somewhat curved, but we have modelled one as a set of straight lines of the same general shape. (Important: The pressure shown is the gauge pressure, not the absolute pressure.) (a) How many joules of net work does this person’s lung do during one complete breath? (b) The process illustrated here is somewhat different from those we have been studying, because the pressure change is due to changes in the amount of gas in the lung, not to temperature changes. (Think of your own breathing. Your lungs do not expand because they’ve gotten hot.) If the temperature of the air in the lung remains a reasonable 20°C, what is the maximum number of moles in this person’s lung during a breath

In an evacuated enclosure, a vertical cylindrical tank of diameter D is sealed by a 3.00kg circular disk that can move up and down without friction. Beneath the disk is a quantity of ideal gas at temperature T in the cylinder figure. Initially the disk is at rest at a distance h = 4.00 m above the bottom of the tank. When a lead brick of mass 9.00 kg is gently placed on the disk, the disk moves downward. If the temperature of the gas is kept constant and no gas escapes from the tank, what distance above the bottom of the tank is the disk when it again comes to rest?

A large tank of water has a hose connected to it. The tank is sealed at the top and has compressed air between the water surface and the top. When the water height h has the value 3.50 m , the absolute pressure p of the compressed air is 4.20×105Pa. Assume that the air above the water expands at constant temperature, and take the atmospheric pressure to be 1.00×105Pa (a) What is the speed with which water flows out of the hose when h = 3.50 m ? (b) As water flows out of the tank, h decreases. Calculate the speed of flow for h = 3.00m and for . (c) At what value of h does the flow stop?

Why is a hot, humid day in the tropics generally more uncomfortable for human beings than a hot, dry day in the desert?

In a hospital, pure oxygen may be delivered at 50 psi (gauge pressure) and then mixed with N2O. What volume of oxygen at 20°C and 50 psi (gauge pressure) should be mixed with 1.7 kg of N2O to get a 50%>50% mixture by volume at 20°C? (a) 0.21 m3 ; (b) 0.27 m3 ; (c) 1.9 m3 ; (d) 100 m3
