Light of wavelength λand frequency v passes through a single slit of width a. The diffraction pattern is observed on a screen a distance x from the slit. Which of the following will decrease the width of the central maximum? (a) Decrease the slit width; (b) decrease the frequency v of the light; (c) decrease the wavelength λof the light; (d) decrease the distance of the screen from the slit. In each case justify your answer.

Short Answer

Expert verified

The correct option is (c) to decrease the wavelength of light.

Step by step solution

01

define single slit diffraction

When monochromatic light is sent through a narrow slit, produces a diffraction pattern on a distant screen which is single slit diffraction. The diffraction pattern contains dark and bright regions creating a fringe-like pattern. Dark fringe where destructive interference occurs and bright fringe where constructive interference occurs. In midst of dark and bright fringes, there is the brightest spot which is called the central maxima. The intensity of bright fringes keeps on decreasing as the fringe gets away from the central maxima.

02

Write the formula of the width of central maxima

Light of wavelength λand frequency vpasses through a single slit of width ( a ) .The diffraction pattern is observed on a screen a distance from the slit. The width of central maxima is given as-

w=2λa

As clear from above expression that

(a) Decreasing the slit width (a) will increase the width of central maxima, as they are inversely proportional to each other.

(b) Decreasing the frequency increases the wavelength of light. As the wavelength is directly proportional to the width of central maxima. Thus, width of central maxima will increase.

(c) Decreasing the wavelength decreases the width of central maxima, as they are directly proportional to each other.

(d) Distance of slit from screen doesn’t affect the width of central maxima so decreasing the distance will have no influence on width of central maxima.

Therefore, only decreasing the wavelength leads to decrease of central maxima.

You are in your car driving on a highway at 25m/swhen you glance in the passenger-side mirror (a convex mirror with radius of curvature 150 cm) and notice a truck approaching. If the image of the truck is approaching the vertex of the mirror at a speed of 1.9 m/swhen the truck is 2.0 m/sfrom the mirror, what is the speed of the truck relative to the highway?

An object is 16.0 cm to the left of a lens. The lens forms an image 36.0 cm to the right of the lens. (a) What is the focal length of the lens? Is the lens converging or diverging? (b) If the object is 8.0 mm tall, how tall is the image? Is it erect or inverted? (c) Draw a principal-ray diagram.

34.13 Dental Mirror. A dentist uses a curved mirror to view teeth on the upper side of the mouth. Suppose she wants an erect image with a magnification of 2.00 when the mirror is 1.25cm from a tooth. (Treat this problem as though the object and image lie along a straight line.) (a) What kind of mirror (concave or convex) is needed? Use a ray diagram to decide, without performing any calculations. (b) What must be the focal length and radius of curvature of this mirror? (c) Draw a principal-ray diagram to check your answer in part (b).

The cornea behaves as a thin lens of focal length approximately1.8 cm, although this varies a bit. The material of which it is made has an index of refraction of 1.38 cm , and its front surface is convex, with a radius of curvature of 5.0 mm. (a) If this focal length is in air, what is the radius of curvature of the back side of the cornea? (b) The closest distance at which a typical person can focus on an object (called the near point) is about 25cm, although this varies considerably with age. Where would the cornea focus the image of an 8.00 mm -tall object at the near point? (c) What is the height of the image in part (b)? Is this image real or virtual? Is it erect or inverted? (Note:The results obtained here are not strictly accurate because, on one side, the cornea has a fluid with a refractive index different from that of air.)

Two slits spaced 0.450 mm apart are placed 75.0 cm from a screen. What is the distance between the second and third dark lines of the interference pattern on the screen when the slits are illuminated with coherent light with a wavelength of 500 nm?
