shows some of the electric field lines due to three-point charges arranged along the vertical axis. All three charges have the same magnitude. (a) What are the signs of the three charges? Explain your reasoning. (b) At what point(s) is the magnitude of the electric field the smallest? Explain your reasoning. Explain how the fields produced by each individual point charge combine to give a small net field at this point or points.

Short Answer

Expert verified

(a) The signs of the three charges are positive, negative and positive

(b) The central line between the two positive charges is the point with the smallest magnitude of electric charge.

Step by step solution

01

Signs of the charges

From the figure we have seen that the electric field lines are coming out from the two outside charges. The upper one and the lower one. Which means that two charges are positive.

The electric field lines are also going toward the middle charge. Indicating the middle one is a negative charge. Hence, we can conclude that the charges of the three charges are: Positive, negative, positive.

02

Electric field of the charges

It is known that the three charges are having the same magnitude. Hence, we can assume that the distance between the charges is same.

Choosing any arbitrary point to the left of the middle charge which we will analyse the net electric field. As we assume that the distance between the charges is equal therefore the angle of the first electric field, made with the horizontal line passing through the middle charge. Which is equal to the angle made by the third charge with the same line:

θ1=θ2=0

Therefore:

finding the point closest

To analyse the electric field at the chosen point into their x-y components, the magnitude of the electric field is given by:

E=14πεϵ0×qr2

Now, as both the electric field of E_1 and E_2 is at as the same point as from our chosen point. As their charges are having the same magnitude hence:

E1=E2=14πεϵ0×qR2

Since the vertical component of both the field cancels each other meaning that the net y components of the electric field at a chosen point is zero.

Ey=0

However,Ex=E2-2·¡³¦´Ç²õθ

Meaning that the horizontal electric field is too small. Same is the case with in the right of the negative charge at the point at same distance at this left point.

Hence, we can conclude that the horizontal line passing through the negative charge contains the point which has the least net electric field.

An astronaut has left the International Space Station to test a new space scooter.

Her partner measures the following velocity changes, each taking place in a 10-sinterval.

What are the magnitude, the algebraic sign, and the direction of the average acceleration in each interval?

Assume that the positive direction is to the right.

(a) At the beginning of the interval, the astronaut is moving toward the right along the x-axis at 15.0m/s, and at the end of the interval she is moving toward the right at5.0m/s .

(a) The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of the trace metal magnesium is 410 mg/day for males. Express this quantity in µg/day. (b) For adults, the RDA of the amino acid lysine is 12 mg per kg of body weight. How many grams per day should a 75-kg adult receive? (c) A typical multivitamin tablet can contain 2.0 mg of vitamin B2 (riboflavin), and the RDA is 0.0030 g/day. How many such tablets should a person take each day to get the proper amount of this vitamin, if he gets none from other sources? (d) The RDA for the trace element selenium is 0.000070 g/day. Express this dose in mg/day.

In an experiment, a shearwater (a seabird) was taken from its nest, flown 5150 km away, and released. The bird found its way back to its nest 13.5 days after release. If we place the origin at the nest and extend the +x-axis to the release point, what was the bird’s average velocity in (a) for the return flight and (b) for the whole episode, from leaving the nest to returning?

Rhea, one of Saturn’s moons, has a radius of 764 km and an acceleration due to gravity of 0.265 m/s2at its surface. Calculate its mass and average density.

You normally drive on the freeway between San Diego and Los Angeles at an average speed of 105 km/h (65 mi/h), and the trip takes 1 h and 50 min. On a Friday afternoon, however, heavy traffic slows you down and you drive the same distance at an average speed of only 70 km/h (43 mi/h). How much longer does the trip take?
