Chromic acid (H₂CrO₄) is used to oxidize alcohols in the aqueous solution of sodium dichromate. It reacts with alcohol to form chromic ester whereas when it reacts with aldehydes it converts aldehyde into Carboxylic acid and secondary alcohols into ketones.

Esterification is defined as an organic reaction in which organic acid (RCOOH) combine with alcohol (ROH) to form an ester and water. Esterification results in the formation of at least one ester product in the reaction.
