Aerosol Propellants: CFCs provided a method to disperse products in an aerosol can without using a flammable propellant. Blowing Agents: CFCs were used to create foams in the manufacturing of products such as insulation, cushioning materials, and disposable foam packaging. 4. Despite their initial widespread use and perceived benefits, CFCs are now known to have a substantial negative impact on the environment. In the 1970s, it was discovered that CFCs contribute to the depletion of the Earth's ozone layer, which protects us from harmful ultraviolet radiation. When CFCs are released into the atmosphere, they eventually break down and release chlorine atoms, which react with ozone molecules and contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer. As a result of these environmental concerns, the production and use of CFCs have been significantly reduced, as agreed upon by the global community in the Montreal Protocol in 1987. Alternatives to CFCs, such as hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), have been developed, which have a lower potential for ozone depletion.
