During DNA replication the leading strand is synthesized continuously and the lagging strand is synthesized discontinuously. It is called semi discontinuous. Replication of DNA.

Semi Discontinuous synthesis

The DNA synthesis is always in the S1 to 31 direction in both strands. The strand which is discontinuously synthesized is referred to as the 鈥榣aggingstrand鈥�. The one continuously polymerized is called the 鈥渓eading strand鈥�.

Simultaneously, both strands take place in replication of DNA. But it has pieces of about 100-250 nucleotides inlength. In lagging the segment is joined by ligaseenzymes.

Thus, DNA must be replicated semi discontinuously.
