Calculating Maximum Closed-Loop Voltage Gain

The maximum closed-loop voltage gain that an op-amp can deliver without distortion is limited by its slew rate. In essence, if the desired gain causes the output voltage to change faster than the op-amp's slew rate allows, distortion will occur. Therefore, calculating this maximum gain is vital for ensuring signal fidelity in your circuit.

The rate of change of input voltage refers to how quickly the input signal to an op-amp changes over time. It is a crucial parameter, as it dictates the required frequency response of the op-amp to faithfully reproduce the input signal without distortion. The faster the input voltage changes, the more demanding it will be for the op-amp to follow.

To calculate this rate, you simply divide the voltage change by the time interval during which the change occurs, often expressed in volts per microsecond (\(V/\text{\textmu s}\)). For instance, if an input signal varies by 0.3V in 10 \text{\textmu s}, the rate of change is 0.03V/\text{\textmu s}.

Importance in Op-Amp Circuits

Understanding this parameter is key when selecting or designing op-amp circuits for specific applications—particularly where high-frequency signals or rapid transient responses are involved. If the rate of change of the input exceeds the capability of the op-amp, the output will not accurately track the input signal, leading to slew rate distortion.
