In the context of a paired t-test, the null hypothesis postulates that the means of two paired groups are equal. Simplifying the information from our exercise, we're stating there's no significant difference before and after a certain treatment or intervention when we express it as \(H_{0}: \mu_{1}=\mu_{2}\).

The null hypothesis is crucial because it can be formally tested and possibly rejected, which could lead to accepting the alternative hypothesis. Still, it is essential to remember that failing to reject the null hypothesis does not prove it's true; it merely suggests insufficient evidence to support a difference.

The alternative hypothesis proposes what we might believe to be true or hope to demonstrate, which is that there is a statistically significant effect or a difference between our groups. Contrary to the null hypothesis, in our example, the alternative hypothesis suggests that the mean differences of the paired groups are not equal as shown by \(H_{a}: \mu_{1} eq \mu_{2}\).

The beauty of the alternative hypothesis is that it gives researchers a claim to test against the null hypothesis. If statistical evidence suggests that the observed data are unlikely under the assumption of the null hypothesis, it empowers us to reject the null hypothesis in favor of the alternative.

A test statistic is a standardized value that is calculated from sample data during a hypothesis test. It's crucial for determining whether the null hypothesis can be rejected. In our paired t-test scenario, the test statistic assesses the difference between paired observations and is calculated using the formula \(t = \frac{\bar{x}_{d}}{s_{d}/\sqrt{n_{d}}}\). This calculation takes the mean difference between paired samples (\(\bar{x}_{d}\)), the sample standard deviation of the differences (\(s_{d}\)), and the number of paired differences (\(n_{d}\)).

By substituting our sample data into the formula, we find that the test statistic guides us on how far our sample statistic lies from the null hypothesis.

The concept of degrees of freedom in a statistical test refers to the number of values in the final calculation of a statistic that are free to vary. When conducting a paired t-test, the degrees of freedom are calculated by subtracting one from the number of paired observations (\(df = n_{d}-1\)).

In simple terms, degrees of freedom can be seen as a way to adjust for the size of our dataset. In our example, where 18 paired samples are used, the degrees of freedom would be 17. This is critical for accurately locating the correct values on a t-distribution table and determining the critical t-value, which ultimately helps decide whether to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis.

The t-distribution, often referred to as the Student's t-distribution, is a probability distribution that resembles the normal distribution but has heavier tails. It's particularly useful when we deal with small sample sizes or unknown population standard deviations. As the sample size increases, the t-distribution approaches the normal distribution.

In our paired t-test example, after determining the test statistic and degrees of freedom, we use the t-distribution to find the critical value. This value then helps us decide whether the differences observed are statistically significant. If our calculated test statistic falls into the 'tail' region beyond the critical value of the t-distribution, we have enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis.
