Data visualization is a compelling way to present information that might be otherwise complex and challenging to understand. It turns large and small datasets into visuals that are easier to comprehend and analyze. Among various visualization tools, the box-and-whisker plot, also known as a box plot, is a standardized way of displaying the distribution of a data set based on a five-number summary: minimum, first quartile (Q1), median, third quartile (Q3), and maximum.

Visualizing data through a box-and-whisker plot effectively highlights outliers, symmetries, or skewness in the dataset. It is often used in exploratory data analysis to give a quick insight into the distribution's shape and to compare several distributions.

Quartiles are statistical values that divide a data set into quarters, hence the name. Once you organize your data in ascending order, three points divide the dataset into four equal parts: the first quartile (Q1), the second quartile (median), and the third quartile (Q3).

Q1 represents the median of the lower half of the data and typically marks the 25th percentile, while Q3 denotes the median of the upper half and corresponds to the 75th percentile. The space between Q1 and Q3 is known as the interquartile range (IQR) and reflects the middle half of the data. Identifying these parameters is crucial when constructing a box-and-whisker plot as they determine the box's boundaries and, thereby, visualize the distribution's spread.
