Glaciers are often termed as rivers of ice, but unlike rivers of water, they proceed with a much slower and more forceful march. The process of glacier formation begins with snowfall. As fresh snow settles and more layers accumulate, the weight of the new snow compresses the lower layers.

Over years, this compression causes the snow to re-crystallize, forming granules known as firn. The transformation continues with the firn becoming denser and eventually turning into solid ice. This metamorphosis takes place over long periods, often spanning hundreds or thousands of years, under the right conditions of temperature and precipitation.

Alpine glaciers form on mountainsides and move down valleys, while continental glaciers spread across vast land areas. A crucial aspect of glacier formation is the balance between accumulation – the addition of snow – and ablation – the loss due to melting and sublimation. For a glacier to grow, accumulation must outpace ablation, a state influenced heavily by the climate.

Regions that support glaciers exhibit distinct climate patterns characterized by long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The presence of glaciers implies that the climate is stable enough for snow to persist year-round and for accumulated snow to exceed melting.

This is due to the albedo effect, where the white surface of the snow and ice reflects a large part of solar radiation, keeping the region cool. Moreover, the topography of glacial areas also impacts climate. The high altitudes of mountainous regions, for example, contribute to lower temperatures, which are conducive to glacier maintenance.

Additionally, glacial regions receive adequate precipitation, often as snow, which is essential for the glacier's growth. The climate in these regions can be described as subpolar or polar, with occasional warm periods that may cause temporary surface melting of glaciers, contributing to the complexity of glacial sustainability and movement.

Glaciers are not just passive elements in the climate system; they actively shape climate on both local and global scales. First and foremost, they do so by influencing albedo, or surface reflectivity. The large expanses of ice associated with glaciers have a high albedo, effectively reflecting sunlight and maintaining cooler global temperatures.

Meltwater from glaciers feeds into rivers and oceans and plays a vital role in sea levels and thermohaline circulation. This circulation drives global ocean currents, affecting weather patterns far from the poles. For instance, glacial melting contributes fresh water to the oceans, which can disrupt the balance of ocean salinity and, consequently, ocean circulation patterns, such as the Gulf Stream.

Glacial movements also grind up rock into fine sediment, which can impact soil and ecosystems when deposited as glacier retreats. Thus, the impact of glaciers on climate is broad, resulting in effects that ripple through the hydrosphere and atmosphere, further demonstrating the intertwined nature of our planet's systems.
