Abrasion is one of the two primary mechanisms through which glaciers erode the Earth's surface. As glaciers move, they carry with them rocks and sediment that have been picked up along their journey. These materials act much like sandpaper.
When the glacier slides over bedrock, these rocks and sediment grind against the surface. This effectively polishes and scratches the bedrock, creating marks known as striations. These striations are key indicators of the glacier's path and the erosion process.
Abrasion's effects might remind you of wearing down a piece of wood with sandpaper. Over time, the bedrock is smoothed, showcasing the immense power and persistence of glacial movement.

Plucking is another vital process in glacial erosion. It adds a somewhat dramatic element to the glacier's journey over land. Unlike abrasion, which wears down rocks, plucking involves the glacier yanking chunks of bedrock from the ground.
During plucking, the glacier's ice freezes onto the bedrock. When the glacier moves, it pulls these frozen pieces away, effectively breaking off sections of rock. This happens mostly on the upstream side of the glacier, where pressure fluctuations ensure effective adhesion and plucking.
The result of plucking is a jagged, unevenly eroded surface that contrasts with the smooth polish left by abrasion. Together, these processes shape unique landscapes and contribute significantly to the formation of various glacial landforms.

Glaciers are powerful architects of our natural environment, carving and shaping numerous landforms as they advance and retreat. The combined efforts of abrasion and plucking result in distinct glacial landforms.
Some of these include:

• U-shaped valleys: Unlike the V-shaped valleys formed by rivers, glacier-carved valleys are more uniform and rounded due to ice's smoothing abrasion.
• Cirques: These are amphitheater-like hollows found at the heads of glacier valleys, often formed in mountainous regions.
• Moraines: These are accumulations of debris and sediment pushed along by the glacier, found at its edges and terminus.

The impressive scope and variety of glacial landforms illustrate the glacier's transformative power. These landforms are reminders of past glacial activity and remain integral components of the landscape in many regions worldwide.
