An abstract method is a method that is declared within an abstract class or interface, but without any implementation details. It has no body (i.e., no definition), thus leaving the details of the implementation to derived or implementing classes. Abstract methods are useful for achieving abstraction, a core concept of object-oriented programming, where we only define a method's signature and leave the specific implementation for the derived classes.

Abstraction is a mechanism that allows us to represent complex systems using simplified models, by focusing on essential properties and behaviours and by hiding unnecessary details. In object-oriented programming, abstraction helps to reduce code complexity and increase reusability by allowing multiple derived classes to share a common interface (defined by the base class or interface), while extending or modifying specific behaviours according to their requirements. Abstract methods are an important part of achieving abstraction in programming.

Another significant purpose of an abstract method is to enforce method overriding. When a class has an abstract method, any derived class must provide an implementation for that method; otherwise, the derived class will also be considered abstract. This mechanism ensures that the derived class provides a proper implementation for the method, avoiding the risk of calling a base class method with no implementation or inappropriate functionality.

Imagine the following scenario: We are designing a system that represents geometric shapes like circles, rectangles, and triangles. Each shape has a method to calculate its area, but the implementation of this method differs for each shape. Here's how we can use an abstract method to achieve this: 1. Create an abstract class named "Shape". 2. Define an abstract method named "calculateArea()" inside the Shape class. 3. Create derived classes (like Circle, Rectangle, and Triangle) that extend the Shape class. 4. For each derived class, provide a specific implementation of the "calculateArea()" method, based on the particular formula for that shape (e.g., pi * r^2 for Circle, base * height / 2 for Triangle, etc.). In this example, the abstract method "calculateArea()" in the Shape class enforces that all derived classes provide their specific implementation, ensuring consistent and appropriate functionality for calculating areas across different shapes.
