ROM, or Read-Only Memory, is a type of non-volatile memory used in computers and other electronic devices. Data stored in ROM cannot be modified, or if it can, the process is often slow and difficult. ROM is used to store firmware, which is a special type of software that is closely tied to the hardware and provides essential instructions for the device to boot up and function.

Unlike RAM, the data in ROM remains even when the device is powered off, making it an ideal place for the foundational software that runs as soon as a device is turned on. The contents of ROM are usually set at the factory and remain unchanged throughout the life of the device.
