V/D/J recombination is a type of somatic recombination that only occurs in developing lymphocytes throughout the T and B cell maturation process.

V/D/J recombination results in a gene whose messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) cannot be translated into an immunoglobulin chain. Joining events that bring J and C out of phase with the previous V gene segment produce nonreproductive genes. Nonproductive rearrangement continues unabated, but productive rearrangement comes to a halt. When two chromosomes lack germline pattern, one goes through a productive rearrangement and generates a functioning gene, while the other goes through a nonproductive rearrangement and does not produce a functional gene. D-J joining occurs during this phase, whereas V-D joining does not occur during the synthesis of immunoglobulins and T-cell receptors in immune system cells during somatic recombination.
