Meiosis has two stages: Meiosis I and Meiosis II. Before meiosis begins, DNA replication occurs in the cell. Then:
- In Meiosis I, homologous chromosomes (each made up of sister chromatids) are separated into two new cells.

Only if fertilization occurs will the secondary oocyte complete meiosis II, resulting in a mature egg and another polar body.
