Which type of chemical reaction, if any, occurs faster at equilibrium: the formation of products from reactants or that of reactants from products?

Short Answer

Expert verified

The chemical reactions proceed in the forward as well as reverse direction. The rate of the forward reaction equalizes the rate of the reverse reaction in the equilibrium reaction. The rates of reaction of forward as well as reverse reaction are equal.

Step by step solution

01

Definition of chemical reaction

Different types of reactants react together to form a product, and the process iscalled a chemical reaction. The products are the substance producedat the end of a chemical reaction. The reactants are the initial substance utilized in this reaction.

Usually, a chemical reaction proceeds ata special rate of reaction. It is known as the rate of reaction.

02

Types of directions in a chemical reaction

There are two directions via which the chemical reaction proceeds:

  • Forward reaction
  • Reverse reaction

Aforward reaction is a reaction in which the reactants produce the products. Areverse reaction occurs in the opposite direction to the forward reaction in which the products react back to produce the reactants.

03

Equilibrium reaction

Equilibrium reaction proceeds in a balanced state. It means both the forward and reverse reaction proceeds in a balanced manner.

The rate of reaction of both these reactions has to be equal. None of these two reactions will proceed in a faster manner.

Hence, the forward reaction, as well as the reverse reaction, is equal in the case of an equilibrium reaction. The formation of products from reactants and reactants from the products proceeds in an equal manner in the equilibrium reaction.

The reactivity of an atom arises from

(A) the average distance of the outermost electron shell from the nucleus.

(B) the existence of unpaired electrons in the valence shell.

(C) the sum of the potential energies of all the electron shells.

(D) the potential energy of the valence shell.

A lithium atom has 3 protons and 4 neutrons. What is its mass number?

Recall that 14C has a half life of 5,730 years. To calibrate the x-axis for 14C decay, write the time before present in years below each half-life.

The researchers found that the Neanderthal fossil had approximately 0.0078 as much 14C as found originally in the atmosphere. (a) Using the numbers on your graph, determine how many half-lives have passed since the Neanderthal died. (b) Using your 14C calibration on the x-axis, what is the approximate age of the Neanderthal fossil in years (round off to the nearest thousand)? (c) Approximately when did Neanderthals become extinct according to this study? (d) The researchers cite evidence that modern humans (H. sapiens) became established in the same region as the last Neanderthals approximately 39,000 – 42,000 years ago. What does this suggest about the overlap of Neanderthals and modern humans?

Draw Lewis dot structures for each hypothetical molecule shown below, using the correct number of valence electrons for each atom. Determine which molecules make sense because each atom has a complete valence shell, and each bond has the correct number of electrons. Explain what makes the other molecule nonsensical, considering the number of bonds each type of atom can make.
