Love encompasses a much deeper affection, entailing care, respect, and a willingness to prioritize another's well-being.

Love's resiliency means it can withstand challenges and changes, whereas liking might waver when faced with difficulties. This persistence is partly why love is often associated with long-term relationships—be they familial, platonic, or romantic—where individuals invest significant time and emotional resources.

Affection is the warm, fond feeling we often have for those whom we like. It's an expression of gentleness and care that can exist in various relationships, including friendships, family ties, and early-stage romantic interests.

However, attachment takes this a step further, embedding the emotional connection into the fabric of our lives. Attachment theory, a psychological model, suggests that attachment is a deep and enduring emotional bond that connects one person to another across time and space. This powerful bond can have significant implications for our behavior and emotional development, influencing how we interact and form relationships throughout our lives. It is also an emotion that drives us to seek out and maintain close relationships, as a form of emotional security as identified by psychologists such as John Bowlby.

According to psychologist Robert Sternberg's Triangular Theory of Love, the components of love can be broken down into three interconnected elements: intimacy, passion, and commitment.

Intimacy

This element refers to feelings of closeness, connectedness, and bondness in loving relationships. Intimacy is that comfortable sense of shared understanding and support.

Passion

This component represents the drives that lead to romance, physical attraction, and sexual consummation. It's the spark that ignites excitement and desire.

Commitment

It entails the decision to stay with another person in the long term. Commitment is what cements the relationship and implies faithfulness and sustained effort.

Each of these components can exist in varying degrees, and their combination leads to different types of love experiences. For example, the blend of intimacy and passion without commitment could result in a mere romantic affair, while all three components together constitute a consummate love, which many consider as an ideal relationship.
