The late stage of alcoholism is characterized by severe health problems and significant life disruptions. Individuals may have developed serious physical or mental health issues due to prolonged alcohol use. Despite facing negative consequences such as job loss or relationship breakdowns, the person continues to drink. Daily activities become nearly impossible without alcohol, and the individual's need for it takes over almost every aspect of their life.

Psychological dependence occurs when a person feels that drinking is necessary to cope with day-to-day life. This can happen even before physical dependence, focusing on how alcohol becomes integrated into one's mental and emotional processes.

Initially, an individual might use alcohol as a way to unwind after a long day or to manage feelings of anxiety or sadness. This can lead to a habit where alcohol is seen as the main method for dealing with emotional challenges.

Over time, this reliance on alcohol becomes more pronounced. Instead of turning to other healthy coping strategies, individuals begin to associate relief from stress or negative emotions solely with alcohol. Eventually, the person feels unable to manage their emotional wellbeing without alcohol's perceived comfort. This kind of dependence can perpetuate the cycle of excessive drinking, as individuals drink to avoid confronting uncomfortable emotions, ensuring the continuation of their psychological dependence.
