Psychoanalytic Theory is a framework for understanding the human mind and behavior developed by Sigmund Freud in the early 20th century. Freud's model of the psyche is divided into three parts: the id, ego, and superego, which interact with each other and shape our psychological landscape.

The theory also sets forth the stages of psychosexual development, where each stage is characterized by the erogenous zone that is the focus of the child's psychic energy. An individual's personality is believed to be largely determined by experiences during these stages. Freud posited that unresolved conflicts during any stage could lead to psychological issues later in life. For example, during the phallic stage, Freud suggested that children become aware of physical differences between sexes leading to concepts like penis envy in girls.

The Phallic Stage is one of the five stages in Freud's theory of psychosexual development, typically occurring between the ages of three and six years. During this stage, Freud believed that the primary focus of the child's libido (sexual energy) is on the genital area. It is also during this time that children start to identify with their same-sex parent, which is called the Oedipus complex in boys and the Electra complex in girls.

Freud posited that girls during the phallic stage experience penis envy, which stems from the realization that they do not have a penis, and this supposedly leads to feelings of inferiority and the development of a weaker superego. Critics argue that this view is limited and discounts the role that societal and cultural factors play in the development of a child. Understanding the nuances of the phallic stage is crucial for comprehending Freud's broader views on psychological development and the controversial aspects of his theories.

Feminist Psychology is an approach that analyzes psychological structures and practices from a gendered perspective, often challenging traditional norms and theories deemed to be sexist or patriarchal. Horney proposed that women's feelings of inferiority were not due to the lack of a penis, but rather the lesser social status afforded to them, particularly during Freud's time.
