The cell body, also known as the soma, is an essential part of a neuron. Think of it as the command center where many key activities in a neuron take place. It is the largest part of the neuron and contains the nucleus, which holds genetic material.

Excitatory messages are signals sent to neurons that make them more likely to fire, or become activated. When a neuron receives an excitatory message, it usually involves the opening of ion channels, leading to an influx of positive ions like sodium (Na鈦�) into the neuron.
This influx causes a change in the electrical charge across the neuron's membrane, making it more positive. If this positive charge reaches a certain threshold, the neuron will fire an electrical impulse called an action potential. Think of it as the "go" signal for neurons.
Major neurotransmitters associated with excitatory messages include glutamate, which is widely found in the brain. These messages play vital roles in many functions like learning, memory, and muscle movements.

Inhibitory messages do the opposite of excitatory messages. They make a neuron less likely to fire. When these signals are received, they often cause the neuron's ion channels to let in negative ions like chloride (Cl鈦�) or to release positive ions like potassium (K鈦�), which makes the inside of the neuron more negative.
This increased negativity makes it difficult for the neuron to reach the threshold needed to fire an action potential. In simple terms, inhibitory messages give the "stop" or "slow down" signal to neurons.
Common neurotransmitters involved in inhibitory signaling include gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). These messages are crucial for balancing neural activity, preventing overexcitation, and allowing for smooth operation of functions like mood regulation and pain perception.
