Role of Weak Force in Nature

For example, it drives the process whereby a neutron can transform into a proton, an electron, and an antineutrino, a change that is essential for the sun's nuclear reactions.

Z bosons, along with their counterparts W bosons, are the force carrier particles of the weak force. The mass of the Z boson is a crucial aspect because it influences the scale of energy and, hence, the range over which the weak force can act. The measured mass of the Z boson is about 91.2 GeV/c^2, which is roughly 91.2 billion electron volts when accounting for the speed of light squared. This is a substantial mass, particularly when compared to the massless photon that mediates the electromagnetic force.

The significant mass of the Z boson explains why the weak force has such a short range. According to the energy-time uncertainty principle, the time for which a Z boson can exist is inversely proportional to its energy (or mass, due to mass-energy equivalence). Consequently, this transient existence limits the distance over which the weak force can operate, typically around 0.1 to 0.001 times the diameter of a proton.
