Infrared technology involves the use of infrared rays for communication. These rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation that occupies a spectrum just beyond what the human eye can detect as light.

Devices like TV remotes use infrared technology to send signals to your television. When you press a button on your remote, it sends an infrared signal encoded with instructions which your television can receive and respond to, such as changing the channel or adjusting the volume. This technology is chosen for its short-range communication capabilities, which is ideal in a household setting where devices are close to each other.

Why Not Other Electromagnetic Waves?

UV rays are not suitable for communication due to the potential harm they can cause to humans and their relatively higher energy which isn't necessary for simple commands. Meanwhile, microwaves and X-rays, owing to their long range and high penetration power, respectively, are overqualified and can pose health risks when used in household appliances.

Electromagnetic radiation is a form of energy that is all around us and takes various forms, including radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, visible light, ultraviolet light, X-rays, and gamma rays.

This radiation is characterized by its wavelength, which is inversely proportional to its frequency; the shorter the wavelength, the higher the frequency and energy of the radiation. Infrared waves occupy a segment between visible light and microwaves, with wavelengths typically ranging from about 700 nanometers (nm) to 1 millimeter (mm).

Safe for Home Use

For remote controls, the safety of electromagnetic radiation is a concern. Infrared falls into a safe range where it can be used without harming users or equipment, making it highly suitable for consumer electronics.

• Transmission Medium: Wireless communication does not use wires but relies on the air as the medium to transmit signals. Infrared remotes use the air to send signals to the receiver.
• Signal Encoding: Signals are encoded with information - with infrared remotes, different commands (volume up, channel change, etc.) are encoded using different pulse patterns.
• Range and Power: The communication range for wireless technologies varies. Infrared remotes have a short range, working best within a few meters from the TV, which limits interference from other devices.

These fundamentals of wireless communication ensure that when you press a button on your remote, the signal is transmitted without wires, it’s recognized and understood by your television, and it performs the intended action without affecting other devices or being disrupted by external signals.
