The unit for measuring luminosity is often compared to the Sun's luminosity, symbolized as \( L_{\odot} \). For a star like the one in the exercise, we compare its luminosity to the Sun by saying it has a luminosity of 3000 \( L_{\odot} \). This means it emits 3000 times more light energy than the Sun.

Understanding a star's luminosity helps astronomers deduce various aspects of the star, such as its size, temperature, and even its age. Luminosity also plays a crucial role in calculating the mass of stars through different relationships, like the mass-luminosity relation we use in finding the mass of main sequence stars.

Calculating the mass of a star, especially a main sequence star, can be done using various methods, one of the most common being the mass-luminosity relation. This relation provides a way to estimate a star's mass based on its luminosity. For main sequence stars, this relationship is approximately given by the formula: \( M = \left( \frac{L}{L_{\odot}} \right)^{\frac{1}{N}} \), where \( M \) is the stellar mass in relation to the Sun's mass, \( L \) is the star's luminosity, and \( N \) is a constant, usually taken to be around 3.5.

This formula arises because more massive stars have higher core pressures and temperatures, leading them to burn their hydrogen fuel faster and shine brighter. Therefore, the mass of a star can often be linked to how luminous it is. Using the exercise example, with a luminosity of 3000 \( L_{\odot} \), we substitute these values into the formula \( M = 3000^{\frac{1}{3.5}} \). By solving it, we find the star's mass to be roughly 18.18 times that of the Sun.

Understanding how to calculate stellar mass is crucial for astrophysics, as it helps in estimating a star's lifespan, evolution, and the likelihood of having planetary systems.
