Unlike their crystalline counterparts, noncrystalline ceramics have a haphazard atomic structure. Imagine a pile of hay, each strand jumbled randomly without any clear pattern. In these ceramics, the absence of a regular repeating pattern results in what's called an amorphous structure.

This random configuration significantly impacts the material’s properties. For instance, the lack of a periodic structure in noncrystalline ceramics leads to an increase in defects, such as dislocations and voids.
