Torque is a fundamental concept in physics, referring to the rotational force applied to an object. In the context of electric motors, torque is the force that causes the motor shaft to turn, and this turning motion is what ultimately powers various machines and devices. To give a tangible example, imagine using a wrench to turn a bolt: the force you apply to the wrench is similar to torque in a motor.

The amount of torque a motor can generate is proportional to the electrical power supplied, as well as the design of the motor itself. Different types of motors and applications require varying levels of torque. For instance, a car's electric window motor requires much less torque than the motor in an industrial lift. It's also important to realize that the torque output can change with the motor's speed. Most motors have a torque-speed curve that shows how these two quantities are related.

Electric motors are integral to countless devices, providing the mechanical energy needed for movement. These devices convert electrical energy into mechanical energy through the interaction of magnetic fields within the motor. An electric motor typically consists of a rotor (or armature) and a stator, along with other components like brushes, bearings, and a casing.

The operation of an electric motor is based on electromagnetic principles. When an electric current passes through the motor windings, it generates a magnetic field, which interacts with the magnetic field of the motor's magnets (permanent or electromagnets) to produce a force. This force acts on the rotor, causing it to rotate. The design of the motor—whether it's an AC (alternating current) or DC (direct current) motor—dictates its operation and characteristics, such as speed control and torque production.

Starting torque, also known as static torque, refers to the amount of torque an electric motor can generate from a standstill position. It's the initial oomph needed to overcome inertia and start an object moving—a critical feature for applications where the load must begin moving from a complete stop.

High starting torque is essential for heavy-duty machinery and tools that start under load, such as compressors and conveyor belts. These machines need a strong initial force to start turning, otherwise, they may not be able to overcome the static friction or the weight of the load they are carrying. Starting torque can be affected by various factors like the motor size, type, and the power source. Enhancing starting torque may involve using a different motor design, such as a capacitor start motor in AC systems, or adjusting the power supply characteristics in the case of DC motors.
