The formation of the solar system is a fascinating event that took place billions of years ago from a large cloud of gas and dust known as the solar nebula. This process is best explained by the nebular hypothesis. The hypothesis proposes that this nebula was set in motion, beginning a series of transformative processes. As the nebula started to spin, it flattened into a disk with most material gravitating towards the center, eventually igniting to form our sun. Around this sun, remaining materials coalesced into planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. Understanding this process helps us appreciate the complexity and connectedness of the different components within the solar system.

Gravitational collapse is a critical phase in the formation of the solar system. During this stage, the solar nebula—a sprawling cloud of gas and dust—began to taper and condense under its gravitational pull. As gravity worked its wonders, the nebula started spinning. The increased rotation caused the cloud to flatten into a disk-like shape, concentrating most of its mass toward the center. This concentration was strong enough to eventually ignite nuclear fusion, giving birth to the sun in the dense center. This spinning disk was the birthplace of the materials that would eventually form the planets. Each step of this gradual collapse was essential in setting the foundation for our current solar system.

Protoplanets are the precursors to the fully formed planets that we are familiar with today. They originated from smaller bodies called planetesimals, which formed as the disk of solar nebula cooled and solid particles collided and clumped together. The process of accretion allowed these planetesimals to grow in size as more collisions occurred. As protoplanets grew larger, their gravitational forces increased, which helped them attract additional matter, including gas, dust, and smaller planetesimals. Over millions of years, these bodies accumulated enough mass to clear their orbits and begin to resemble the planets that populate our solar system.

Terrestrial planets, like Earth, Mars, Venus, and Mercury, are characterized by their rocky, solid surfaces. They formed closer to the sun in the hotter regions of the solar nebula. At these temperatures, lighter gases were expelled by strong solar winds, leaving behind heavier elements like metals and silicates. These terrestrial materials gradually accreted to form planetesimals and eventually protoplanets in this inner region. Because of the solar wind, these planets generally contain fewer gases compared to their more distant gas giant cousins. Their relatively small size and solid nature make them distinctly different from the gas giants in our solar system.

Gas giants are massive planets that formed further from the sun where temperatures were cooler. These planets, including Jupiter and Saturn, began as giant protoplanets that were able to gather large quantities of gas and dust. Due to their significant gravitational influence, these bodies attracted light gases like hydrogen and helium from the solar nebula. This resulted in the formation of thick gaseous atmospheres around rocky and icy cores. Unlike terrestrial planets, gas giants have a much larger size and they consist mostly of hydrogen and helium, making them very different in composition and appearance. Their location in the colder part of the solar nebula allowed them to accumulate more gas, contributing to their large size and distinctive nature.
