An electric vehicle starts from rest and accelerates at a rate of2.0m/s2in a straight line until it reaches a speed of 20 m/s. The vehicle then slows at a constant rate of1.0m/s2until it stops. (a) How much time elapses from start to stop? (b) How far does the vehicle travel from start to stop?

Short Answer

Expert verified

(a) The time of elapse from start to stop is 30 sec .

(b) The distance traveled by the vehicle from start to stop is 300 m.

Step by step solution

01

Given data

Acceleration during the speeding up is, a1=-2.0m/s2

Final velocity during the speeding up is, v=20m/s

Acceleration during the speeding down is, a2=-1.0m/s2

02

Understanding the kinematic equations of motion

Kinematic equations can be used to find the distance covered by the vehicle during the acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle. Using the kinematic equation find the time required for the vehicle to stop and also the distance it has traveled.

The equations for the motion of a particle with constant acceleration are,

vf=vi+at(i)vf2=vi2+2ax(ii)

Here,vf is the final velocity,vi is the initial velocity, a is the acceleration, t is the time and x is the distance.

03

(a) Determination of the time elapses from start to stop

Here, consider two motions, one from 0 m/s to 20 m/s with acceleration of2.0m/s2and another from 20 m/s to 0 m/s to with acceleration of-1.0m/s2

Now, consider the first motion from 0 m/s to 20 m/s with acceleration of2.0m/s2

vf=vi+a1t120=0+2t1t1=10sec

Now consider second motion from 20 m/s to 0 m/s with acceleration of -1.0m/s2.

vf=vi+a2t20=20+(-1)t2t2=20sec

So total time elapsed from start to stop is,

t=t1+t2=10sec+20sec=30sec

Therefore, the total time that elapses from start to stop is 30 sec .

04

(b) Determination of the distance traveled from start to stop

For first motion.

vf2=vi2+2a1x1

Solve the equation for distance.

x1=vf2-vi22a1

Substitute the values of initial and final velocities.

x1=202-0222=100m

For second motion,

x2=vf2-vi22a2=02-2022(-1)=200m

So total distance is,

x=x1+x2=100m+200m=300m

Thus, the distance travelled by the vehicle from start to stop is 300 m.

When a soccer ball is kicked toward a player and the player deflects the ball by 鈥渉eading鈥 it, the acceleration of the head during the collision can be significant. Figure 2-38 gives the measured acceleration a(t) of soccer player鈥檚 head for a bare head and a helmeted head, starting from rest. The scaling on the vertical axis is set byas=200m/s2.Attimet=7.0ms , what is the difference in the speed acquired by the bare head and the speed acquired by the helmeted head?

The speed of a bullet is measured to be 640m/s as the bullet emerges from a barrel of length 1.20m. Assuming constant acceleration, find the time that the bullet spends in the barrel after it is fired.

Figure 2-42 shows part of a street where traffic flow is to be controlled to allow a platoon of cars to move smoothly along the street. Suppose that the platoon leaders have justreached intersection 2, where the green appeared when they were distance dfrom the intersection. They continue to travel at a certain speed vp(the speed limit) to reach intersection 3, where the green appears when they are distance dfrom it. The intersections are separated by distancesD23andD12. (a) What should be the time delay of the onset of green at intersection 3 relative to that at intersection 2 to keep the platoon moving smoothly?

Suppose, instead, that the platoon had been stopped by a red light at intersection 1. When the green comes on there, the leaders require a certain time trto respond to the change and an additional time to accelerate at some rate ato the cruising speedVp. (b) If the green at intersection 2 is to appear when the leaders are distance d from that intersection, how long after the light at intersection 1

turns green should the light at intersection 2 turn green?
