Elasticity is the property of a material that allows it to return to its original shape and size after the stress causing the deformation is removed. Imagine stretching a rubber band and then letting it go. The rubber band snaps back to its original shape because of its elasticity. Likewise, many materials, when subject to normal forces, will return to their original form.

This ability to bounce back is important in applications requiring materials to undergo repeated deformations, such as springs or shock absorbers.

However, this elasticity has its limits, known as the elastic limit. Crossing the elastic limit means permanent deformations occur, and the material cannot fully return to its original dimensions.

Material deformation refers to the change in the shape or size of a material due to applied forces or stresses. This can be observed in various forms such as stretching, compressing, bending, or twisting.

When a material deforms, it undergoes internal stress. If the stress is released and the material returns to its original shape, the deformation is said to be elastic. However, if the material does not return to its original shape, the deformation is considered to be plastic or permanent.

Understanding material deformation is crucial when designing structures or products that must withstand various forces without breaking or permanently deforming. Engineers must consider the material properties and ensure they are within the limits of elastic deformation to avoid damage or failure.

The stress-strain cycle describes how a material reacts to repeated applications of stress and strain. When a material is stressed, it deforms (strains) in response. The relationship between stress (force per unit area) and strain (deformation) is typically linear at first but can become non-linear as the material approaches its elastic limit.

To fully understand this cycle, it helps to plot a stress-strain curve. At lower stress levels, the material deforms elastically and returns to its original shape once the stress is removed. As the stress increases, the material may enter a plastic deformation phase where permanent changes occur.

Repeated stress and resulting strain can cause elastic fatigue, a phenomenon where the material's elasticity degrades over time, making it less able to return to its original shape. Engineers and designers must account for the stress-strain cycle to ensure the longevity and durability of materials in practical applications.
