Friction is a force that opposes the relative motion between two surfaces in contact. When an object slides across a surface or through a fluid, frictional forces act to slow it down and eventually bring it to a stop. When you lift a ball, you're adding gravitational potential energy to it, and when you let it fall, that potential energy converts into kinetic energy. Understanding the transformation between these forms of energy is crucial in analyzing physical systems.

Thermal energy is the internal energy present in a system due to its temperature. It's related to the random, disordered motion of the molecules within an object. The faster the molecules or atoms in a substance vibrate or move, the higher the temperature and thus the greater the thermal energy.

When discussing energy conversion, it is key to recognize that thermal energy cannot be completely transformed back into mechanical energy due to the second law of thermodynamics. This entropy-driven principle explains why some energy will always be 'lost' as heat in such conversions and why we can't create perfectly efficient systems.
