A high pass filter (HPF) is an electronic circuit that allows signals with a frequency higher than a certain cutoff frequency to pass through it while attenuating lower frequencies. This filter is crucial in applications where it is necessary to block out lower frequency noise or to select high-frequency signals for further processing.

In the exercise, we discuss a single-pole high pass filter, which means it uses one reactive component (a capacitor in this case) in conjunction with a resistor. The 'single-pole' term refers to the slope of the filter's transition band; for every pole, the attenuation after the cutoff frequency increases by 20 dB per decade.

The design of an HPF is relatively simple. It consists of a resistor (R) and a capacitor (C) in a configuration where the output signal is taken across the resistor. The critical frequency, also known as the cutoff frequency, is where the output signal is reduced to 70.7% of the input signal, and it can be calculated using the formula \( f_c = \dfrac{1}{2 \pi R C} \).

A frequency-selective circuit is designed to pass certain frequencies while blocking others. It acts as a filter that can be tailored to specific frequency ranges, depending on the need. These circuits are the building blocks of electronic filters, like the high pass, low pass, band pass, and notch filters.

The exercise in question involves a frequency-selective circuit configured as a high pass filter. The resistor-capacitor (RC) composition is particularly sensitive to the frequency of the incoming signal. At low frequencies, the capacitor acts like an open circuit, blocking the flow of current and hence the signal. As the frequency increases, the capacitive reactance decreases, and more signal is allowed to pass through.

Understanding the principles of frequency selectivity is fundamental when designing electronic communication systems, audio processing equipment, and even in power circuitry to ensure only the desired frequency bands are manipulated or observed.

The filter bandwidth is a measure of the range of frequencies that a filter can pass without significant attenuation. It is often defined in terms of a band of frequencies between two cutoff points where the filter's performance is within a certain level of its maximum response. For a high pass filter, bandwidth can refer to the range of frequencies above the cutoff frequency where the signal is not unduly attenuated.

In the context of the high pass filter in our exercise, we were asked to determine the bandwidth. Unfortunately, with just the resistance and capacitance values, we cannot ascertain the bandwidth because additional information about the filter's transfer function or the frequency response is required. A common parameter associated with bandwidth is the -3 dB point, which is the frequency at which the power of the output signal drops to half the power of the input signal. This usually marks the boundary of what is considered significant attenuation for filters.
