Eris is one of the most massive known dwarf planets in our solar system. Discovered in 2005, Eris was initially thought to be larger than Pluto, causing a stir in the astronomical community and leading to the reclassification of Pluto as a dwarf planet. Eris is part of a category of objects known as trans-Neptunian objects, as they orbit the Sun at a greater average distance than Neptune.

Eris has a moon of its own, called Dysnomia, and the duo orbits at an average distance of about 68 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. One AU is the average distance from the Earth to the Sun, which is approximately 93 million miles or 150 million kilometers. With an orbit so far out, Eris takes about 557 years to complete a single orbit around the Sun. Its surface is extremely cold, reflecting about 96% of the sunlight that hits it, indicating a surface covered likely in a layer of frost composed of methane or nitrogen ice.

The Kuiper Belt is a vast region of space extending from just beyond Neptune's orbit, about 30 AU from the Sun, out to approximately 55 AU. It's somewhat similar to the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter but is far larger, occupying a space about 20 times wider and 20 to 200 times more massive.

While most people have heard of Halley's Comet, less know that such comets originate from either the Kuiper Belt or the more distant Oort Cloud. The objects found in the Kuiper Belt, known as Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs), are mostly small, icy bodies that are remnants from the solar system's formation. These KBOs can sometimes be nudged into the inner solar system by gravitational interactions, becoming the comets we sometimes see in the night sky.

The Kuiper Belt is also where many dwarf planets, including Pluto and Eris, are located. This region of space is important for understanding our solar system's history and evolution, as it contains pristine remnants of the primordial material that formed the Sun and planets.
