Lightning is one of nature's most powerful displays and a fascinating phenomenon that occurs in thunderstorms. It involves the discharge of electricity from storm clouds, resulting from the separation of electrical charges. When a large enough charge buildup occurs, a significant electrical potential difference is created between the clouds or between the clouds and the ground, leading to the discharge of electricity.

This discharge creates a brilliant flash of light as electrons move at high speeds, which we see as a bolt of lightning. The lightning bolt heats the surrounding air to about 30,000 degrees Celsius – five times hotter than the sun's surface! As a result, the air rapidly expands and contracts, creating an acoustic shock wave that radiates from the lightning channel.

A sonic boom is a phenomenon that occurs when an object travels through the air at a speed faster than sound, known as supersonic speed. As the object moves, it compresses the air in front of it, creating a shock wave. Imagine pushing your hand through a still pool of water and watching the ripples radiate out; similarly, a sonic boom creates a cone-shaped wave that moves outward and rearward in all directions.

Aircraft, such as fighter jets or the Concorde, are often associated with sonic booms when they fly overhead at supersonic speeds. The interpretation of a sonic boom greatly depends on the observer's proximity to the cone's path, sometimes perceived as a loud explosive sound or simply a deep rumble.

A shock wave is a type of propagating disturbance that moves faster than the local speed of sound and is characterized by an abrupt, nearly discontinuous change in pressure, temperature, and density of the medium through which it travels. It's not limited to just air; shock waves can travel through any elastic medium, including water or solids.

These waves are produced by explosive events, such as a lightning discharge, or by supersonic objects, like aircraft or meteorites entering the atmosphere. When the wave front passes through the air, it is frequently audible and can cause significant pressure changes, shaking buildings, or even breaking windows, depending on the energy released during the event that caused the shock wave.
