Imagine the ocean as a vast blanket, being gently tugged at its corners by invisible hands. These hands are the tidal forces, which result from the differences in the gravitational attraction exerted by celestial bodies such as the Moon and the Sun on different parts of the Earth. Because the Earth is a sphere, the side nearest to the Moon experiences the strongest pull, causing the water to bulge outwards, leading to what we call a high tide.

On the opposite side, even though the Moon is further away, its gravitational pull still manages to tug on that swath of water, creating another bulge, and thus another high tide. Consequently, the areas perpendicular to the line between the Earth and the Moon experience low tides. During spring tides, however, these bulges are especially pronounced, which we will explore more in connection with the gravitational pull and the moon phases.

Gravitational pull is akin to the force of attraction that a classroom bully might have when it comes to lunch tickets - the more you have, the stronger the pull on those around you. In the cosmos, the Sun and the Moon are the bullies, but instead of lunch tickets, their currency is mass. The Sun, with its immense mass, exerts a powerful gravitational pull on all objects in the solar system, including the Earth and its waters.

Similarly, the Moon, though significantly smaller than the Sun, is much closer to the Earth and thus has a profound effect on our planet's tides due to its gravitational pull. During spring tides, the Sun and the Moon work together, 'pulling' on the Earth's waters from aligned positions. This cumulative effect results in the highest tides known as the spring tides, where the water levels can rise and fall dramatically, more so than during other phases of the moon or positions of the Sun and Moon relative to the Earth.

The Moon phases are a compelling celestial dance, a monthly transformation from darkness into light and back again. They are determined by the Moon's position in relation to the Earth and the Sun. During the new moon phase, the Moon and the Sun are on the same side of the Earth, effectively creating a powerful tag-team effect on Earth's oceans. Contrastingly, during a full moon, the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. Despite the difference in configuration, both of these alignments - called syzygy - augment the tidal force, causing the most significant variation between high and low tides, known as spring tides.

Spring tides are not named after the season, but rather the jumping action of springing high and low. By observing the Moon, whether it is a thin crescent or a glowing orb in the night sky, we can predict the type of tides that will ensue. When the Moon is full or new, coastal dwellers brace for the push and pull of the forthcoming spring tides.
