In the case of a lunar eclipse, syzygy occurs when the Earth is exactly or nearly between the Sun and the Moon. This alignment is not a common occurrence; the orbits of the Earth and the Moon are such that syzygy happens infrequently, resulting in the relative rarity of lunar eclipses.
