Long-period comets are intriguing cosmic wanderers that originate from the distant reaches of the Oort Cloud. These celestial bodies are composed largely of ice and dust. Unlike their short-period counterparts that take less than 200 years to orbit the Sun, long-period comets have orbital periods that can exceed 200 years, with some taking thousands of years to complete one revolution. For a comet to be classified as a long-period one, it typically follows an elongated ellipse trajectory, which can take it far beyond the outer planets before swinging back closer to the Sun. The gravitational pull from the giant planets or passing stars can nudge these comets from their remote birthplace in the Oort Cloud into orbits that bring them closer to the Sun and Earth.
