The Hadean Eon marks the very beginning of Earth's history, starting from the formation of the planet about 4.6 billion years ago until around 4 billion years ago. This eon was once thought to be completely inhospitable, earning the name 'Hadean' from 'Hades', referencing the ancient Greek underworld.

Although no rocks from the Hadean Eon are known to exist on Earth's surface today, zircon crystals found within younger strata offer clues to the conditions of early Earth. These ancient crystals suggest the presence of a liquid hydrosphere, indicating that water, one of the essential ingredients for life as we know it, was present.

Despite the harsh conditions, with extreme volcanic activity and a molten surface, the Hadean Eon laid the groundwork for the development of life. The late Hadean is characterized by the cooling of the planet's surface, the formation of the first stable crust, and the beginnings of the Earth's magnetic field.

Following the Hadean, the Archean Eon, approximately 4 billion to 2.5 billion years ago, saw the establishment of the Earth's first continental crusts. Volcanic activity remained high, but life began to emerge during this time.

The first evidence of life, such as stromatolites created by microbial mats, dates back to the Archean. These organisms were likely similar to modern extremophiles that thrive in hot, acidic environments, hinting at the resilience of life. This eon was crucial for the development of the atmosphere as well. The emergence of photosynthetic bacteria led to the production of oxygen, although it would take some time before the atmosphere resembled the one we know today.

Oxygen was initially absorbed by oceans and rock formations, leading to the creation of banded iron formations. Only later, in the ensuing eon, would oxygen levels rise significantly enough to impact the planet's entire environment.

The Proterozoic Eon, spanning from around 2.5 billion to 541 million years ago, encompasses a vast period characterized by significant geological and biological changes. It's divided into three eras: the Paleoproterozoic, Mesoproterozoic, and Neoproterozoic.

Dramatic shifts in climate occurred, including the Huronian glaciation, which was one of the Earth's first ice ages. Another important event was the Great Oxygenation Event, during which oxygen-producing bacteria radically increased the atmosphere's oxygen levels, paving the way for more complex life forms.

In the Neoproterozoic, the supercontinent Rodinia broke apart, leading to increased environmental diversity. Organisms also began to diversify, and towards the end of the Proterozoic, the first multicellular forms appeared, like the soft-bodied Ediacaran biota. This set the stage for the Cambrian Explosion in the following eon, which saw an unprecedented surge in the diversity and complexity of life.
