Plane mirrors are a common type of mirror that have a flat reflective surface. They're used in everyday situations, such as in bathrooms or dressing tables. A significant feature of plane mirrors is that they reflect light in a way that the angle of reflection equals the angle of incidence. This means that light bounces off the mirror at the same angle it hits the surface.

Because plane mirrors reflect light in a predictable manner, they create images that have specific characteristics. These images are upright and always appear the same size as the object being reflected. This consistent behavior makes plane mirrors ideal for situations where a true-to-size reflection is needed, such as in situations where you want to see an accurate reflection of yourself or another object.

Image formation in plane mirrors occurs when light from an object strikes the mirror and reflects back towards the observer. The reflected light rays appear to diverge from a point behind the mirror, even though the light never actually passes through that point. This creates the impression that the image is located behind the mirror surface.

The formed image is called a virtual image because it cannot be projected on a screen. To construct the image path, one might trace the reflected light rays backward in straight lines until they converge. This provides an understanding of where the virtual image appears to be. Importantly, the size of the image will be the same as the object's size, maintaining the object's dimensions.
