While they were once praised for their stability and non-flammability, these same characteristics contribute to their environmental persistence. One of the main environmental impacts of CFCs is their contribution to ozone layer depletion. As the ozone layer becomes thinner, it is less effective at filtering ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This increased UV exposure can lead to adverse effects such as skin cancer in humans and damage to ecosystems, particularly affecting marine life and plant health. The movement towards reducing CFCs highlights a global commitment to restoring environmental balance.

Ozone layer depletion refers to the thinning of the ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere. The ozone layer acts as a protective shield, absorbing and scattering the sun’s harmful UV rays. CFCs are a primary contributor to this depletion. When released, they break down and interact with ozone molecules. The interaction between chlorine from CFCs and ozone catalyzes reactions that destroy ozone molecules.
Without the ozone layer’s protection, excessive UV radiation reaches Earth. This increased radiation can lead to several problems:

Efforts to combat ozone layer depletion include the Montreal Protocol, which aimed to phase out the use of CFCs. This agreement is a significant step towards reversing the damage done to the ozone layer.

Chlorofluorocarbons, despite their harmful environmental impact, were once widely used due to their beneficial properties. Their main uses included:

• Refrigeration: CFCs were used in air conditioning systems and refrigerators because they are effective and safe refrigerants.
• Aerosols: They served as propellants in aerosol sprays due to their ability to evaporate quickly and be non-reactive with product ingredients.
• Foam manufacturing: CFCs were used to produce foam products such as insulation and packaging, taking advantage of their non-flammable nature.

Although CFCs served these purposes well, the realization of their harmful effects led to the development of alternative substances. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) have replaced CFCs in many applications, as they are less harmful to the ozone layer. This transition signifies an essential shift in technology aimed at reducing environmental harm and fostering sustainability.
