When we hear a tuning fork being struck near a resonance column, the sound produced may seem to fluctuate in volume. This phenomenon occurs due to a principle known as sound wave interference, which is a fundamental concept in physics. Sound waves, similar to other types of waves, can constructively or destructively interfere with each other.Constructive interference happens when the crests of two sound waves align, which results in a louder sound. Conversely, destructive interference occurs when the crest of one wave aligns with the trough of another, leading to a decrease in sound intensity or even silence. When two sound waves have nearly identical frequencies, as in the exercise involving a tuning fork and a resonance column, their interference produces a series of alternating loud and soft sounds, which we perceive as beats.The number of beats per second, or beat frequency, equals the absolute difference in the frequencies of the two interfering waves. In the demonstrated exercise, the beat frequency is calculated as the absolute difference between the tuning fork frequency (256 Hz) and the resonance column frequency (254 Hz), giving us 2 Hz. This signifies we would hear two beats every second when the tuning fork and the resonance column sound together.

In the context of our example with the tuning fork and the resonance column, 'resonance' is a term which indicates a significant increase in the amplitude of a wave, owing to a matching frequency between the wave produced and the natural frequency of the system it's encountering.When the tuning fork, having a specific frequency, is excited and held at the mouth of the resonance column, if the natural frequency of the air column closely matches the frequency of the tuning fork, the system can oscillate with greater amplitude. This happens because at the resonance frequency, waves are continuously reinforced by matching the natural vibrations of the system, leading to a much stronger sound. Resonance is not only a phenomenon in acoustics but also a crucial concept in many fields, including engineering, where the effects of resonance can be seen in structures subjected to periodic forces.However, for the purpose of the exercise, we focus on the auditory aspect of resonance. Here, the matching frequencies would generally result in a louder sound, but the slightly different frequencies create the phenomenon of beats as described in the previous section.

In our exercise, the tuning fork has a frequency of 256 Hz, which means it vibrates 256 times per second.The frequency of a tuning fork is precisely known, allowing it to be used as a standard for tuning musical instruments. The material, length, mass, and shape of the tuning fork's prongs all affect its frequency. The frequency chosen for the exercise is a standard notational concert pitch, named 'Middle C' in music, often used as a reference point in music tuning.Since tuning forks produce a very stable frequency, when its sound waves come into contact with the sound waves from another source of similar frequency (like the resonance column), the small difference in their frequencies becomes evident in the form of beat frequency. This is what allows us to observe the beat phenomenon as the waves from the tuning fork intersect with the waves from the resonance column, confirming the principle of sound wave interference.
