Descriptive statistics provide a powerful summary for sets of data. They are the basic tools to understand and describe the essential features of data one piece at a time. This concept includes various measures such as mean, median, mode (measures of central tendency), and others like standard deviation and range (measures of variability).

In our gas mileage example, we have a small data set: 26.3, 28.7, 27.4, 26.6, 27.4, and 26.9. To begin with, by calculating the mean, we've taken the first step into descriptive statistics. This single measure tells us about the center of our data. Yet to fully understand and describe our data's behavior, we could consider its dispersion, such as range and standard deviation, to get a sense of how spread out the gas mileage values are around the mean.

The concept of central tendency is at the heart of understanding data. It gives us an idea of the average or middle of a data set. Central tendency can be measured through various statistics, the most common of which are the mean, median, and mode.

The mean is the arithmetic average and is calculated by summing all the data points and dividing them by the number of points, which is what we demonstrated in the gas mileage exercise. The median is the middle value when the data is ordered, and the mode is the most frequently occurring value. Each measure has its unique use case, with the mean often used for numerical data with fewer extreme values (outliers).

Data analysis involves inspecting, transforming, and modeling data with the goal of discovering useful information, informing conclusions, and supporting decision-making. It is much more than just calculating the mean or median—it encompasses a wide set of processes, from initially defining the problem and collecting data, to interpreting results and reporting conclusions.

In the context of our gas mileage exercise, the mean was computed to analyze a specific aspect of the data. For a more comprehensive analysis, one would also examine other characteristics of the data set, such as trends over time, comparisons to other data sets (e.g., industry standards for fuel efficiency), or even build predictive models to forecast future gas mileage based on additional variables like car type or driving habits.
