Mathematical induction is one of these powerful proof techniques. It helps demonstrate the validity of a proposition for an infinite set, usually among natural numbers. The basis step, also known as the base case, lays the foundation for a proof by induction. This step involves proving the proposition for the first natural number, typically 1, though occasionally 0 or another start point might be used. Think of the basis step as the first domino to fall. It confirms that the statement holds true for the initial case, without which the entire sequence of logical deductions cannot begin. For example, suppose we need to prove a formula involving summation. The basis step might involve substitute the smallest natural number into the formula to ensure it holds true in this initial phase. Without a firmly established basis step, the rest of the induction cannot proceed correctly, making it crucially important that it is verified with precision.

The induction step is a cornerstone of mathematical induction, serving as the logical leap from one specific case to the next. Once the basis step confirms the proposition for the initial natural number, the induction step involves showing that if the statement holds for an arbitrary natural number, say "n," then it must also hold for "n + 1." This step requires us to assume the proposition true for "n"—known as the induction hypothesis—and use this assumption to prove the statement for "n + 1." By confirming this link between successive numbers, the induction step ensures the progression of truth through the entire set of natural numbers. It guarantees that once the first domino falls—thanks to the basis step—every subsequent domino in the infinite sequence will also topple.
