The factorial function plays a crucial role when calculating the number of ways to arrange or permute a set of items. In the problem at hand, the factorial notation appears when we consider the total number of permutations for a set of distinct items. For a set of 7 different letters, the permutations are \(7!\), which is equal to 5040 possible arrangements.

One important property of a factorial is that \(0!\) is defined to be 1, which often serves as a useful starting point in various combinatorial problems. For a set of distinct objects, the number of permutations of \(n\) different items taken \(r\) at a time, is given by \(P(n, r) = \frac{n!}{(n-r)!}\). For example, if we have a set of 3 distinct letters {A, B, C} and want to know how many ways we can arrange 2 of them, we use the permutation formula to get \(P(3, 2) = \frac{3!}{(3-2)!} = 6\) different permutations (AB, BA, AC, CA, BC, CB).

However, if the objects are not all distinct and there are repetitions, as in the exercise example with repeated 'A's, we must adjust the formula to account for indistinguishable outcomes. This modified permutation formula divides the total permutations by the factorial of the repeated elements' occurrences to avoid overcounting, leading to \(\frac{7!}{2!}\), or 2520 distinguishable permutations of the given letters.

Combinatorics is a branch of mathematics dealing with counting, arranging, and combining things. It is key to solving problems that ask 'How many ways can I do this?' or 'What are all the possible combinations?'.

In our example, combinatorics allow us to calculate the number of distinguishable permutations of the letter set {A, L, G, E, B, R, A}.
