Subtraction is essentially the inverse of addition. When subtracting, we move leftward on the number line, taking away value from a starting point. In our calculation, we rewrite \( -3.5 + 7 \) as \( 7 - 3.5 \) to align with our natural understanding of subtraction. By subtracting 3.5 from 7, we are moving left from 7 by 3.5 units on the number line.

This is where our 'rule of thumb' comes into play: adding a negative is similar to subtracting a positive, and thus we treat the '+ -3.5' portion of the expression as a subtraction operation. This visualization helps us grasp the concept that we have a total of 7 and reduce it by 3.5, arriving at the simplified answer of 3.5.
