Understanding coordinate geometry is essential for graphing and analyzing geometric figures on a plane. Essentially, coordinate geometry involves plotting points, lines, and curves on a two-dimensional grid called the Cartesian plane. This plane is defined by two perpendicular number lines: the horizontal axis (x-axis) and the vertical axis (y-axis). Each point on the plane can be identified by an ordered pair of numbers \( (x, y) \) known as coordinates.

When it comes to graphing a line through two given points, one must locate these points using their coordinates. In the exercise, the points given are \( (-3, 6) \) and \( (-3, 0) \) which share the same x-coordinate. This is a telling sign that the line is vertical—one of the special cases in coordinate geometry since vertical lines do not function as most lines do within this system.

A linear equation represents a straight line when graphed on the coordinate plane. The standard form of a linear equation is \( y = mx + b \), where \( m \) is the slope and \( b \) is the y-intercept. The slope tells us how steep the line is, and the y-intercept indicates where the line crosses the y-axis.

However, not all lines fit neatly into this formula. In the case of vertical lines, the slope is undefined because the change in x is zero, and dividing by zero is not possible in mathematics. Instead, vertical lines have the equation \( x = a \), where \( a \) is the shared x-coordinate of all points on the line—meaning the line's position is constant along the x-axis, resulting in its vertical orientation. As shown in our exercise, since both given points have the same x-coordinate of -3, the equation of the line is simply \( x = -3 \).

The slope of a line is a measure of its steepness and is calculated as the ratio of the change in the y-coordinates to the change in the x-coordinates of two distinct points on the line, typically expressed as \( m = \frac{\Delta y}{\Delta x} \)

In most scenarios, finding the slope is straightforward. However, when it comes to vertical lines, the concept of slope encounters a unique situation. If we attempted to calculate the slope for our vertical line using the points \( (-3, 6) \) and \( (-3, 0) \), the difference in y-coordinates would be 6, but the difference in x-coordinates would be 0, leading to a division by zero. Since this is undefined, we say that the slope of a vertical line is undefined. This also explains why the linear equation format \( y = mx + b \) isn't used for vertical lines—the slope \( m \) simply does not exist in this context.
