Finding a common denominator is a crucial step in the process of managing fractions within an equation. A common denominator is essentially a number that both denominators (in any fractions you’re dealing with) can be divided into evenly.
For example, in our original problem, we had fractions with denominators 7 and 2. To make the math easier, we looked for the least common multiple of these numbers, which is 14. Rewriting each fraction with 14 as the denominator helps in clearing the fractions altogether.
Here’s how that works:

• Multiply each term in the equation by 14.
• This transforms \(-\frac{9}{7}x \) into \(-18x\), \(\frac{9}{2}\) into \(63\), and \(-\frac{5}{2}\) into \(-35\).
• The fractions disappear, leading us to an equation filled with whole numbers.

Working with equations becomes much more straightforward after this step.

Once you have transformed your equation to eliminate fractions, it becomes much easier to solve. The key is to isolate the variable, which means getting the variable \(x\) alone on one side of the equation.
In the resulting equation \(-18x + 63 = -35\), we want to measure everything relative to \(x\). This means moving any constants or other terms away from \(x\).
Here’s the process:

• Subtract 63 from both sides to get all the constant terms on one side: \(-18x = -98\).
• Now, divide every term by \(-18\) to solve for \(x\), isolating it completely: \(x = \frac{-98}{-18}\).
• Finally, simplify that fraction to get \(x = \frac{49}{9}\).

Understanding the idea of isolating the variable is a guidepost for all equation solving. Once you remember to focus on getting \(x\) alone, you are always on the right path to discovering the answer.
