Understanding place value is integral when working with decimals. Place value refers to the value of a digit depending on its position within a number. The place value extends to both sides of the decimal point. To the left of the decimal, place values increase from ones, tens, hundreds, and so on. To the right, they decrease from tenths, to hundredths, to thousandths, etc. In decimal '15.2', the '1' is in the tens place, and the '5' is in the ones place, while the '2' is in the tenths place.

Recognizing place value is necessary when writing decimals in words because each digit has a specific weight based on its position. Hence, if the decimal part '2' was in a different place, such as the hundredths or thousandths, it would change the whole number's value.

When it comes to reading decimals aloud or writing them in words, a clear method helps prevent confusion. After identifying the whole number and decimal parts, we read the whole number as we normally do. Then, we mention the decimal point as 'and'. Following that, we read the number after the decimal point as a whole number, followed by the place value of the last digit.

For instance, the decimal '15.2' is read as 'fifteen and two tenths'. If there were multiple numbers after the decimal, we would read them all together before stating their final place value position. It is essential not only to understand how to read them but also how to express these numbers in words correctly for effective communication in both everyday and academic contexts.
