Simplifying rational expressions is the process of making them as straightforward as possible, much like clearing the clutter from a room to reveal its beauty. A well-simplified expression has no common factors between the numerator and denominator, other than 1, and no factors in the denominator that could make the denominator equal to zero.

One simplifies by first factoring the numerator and denominator, then canceling out any common factors. This is equivalent to reducing a fraction to its lowest terms in arithmetic. For instance, the expression \( \frac{x^2 - 4}{x^2 - 2x} \) can be simplified to \( \frac{x + 2}{x} \) by canceling out the common factor of \( x - 2 \).

Simplification may or may not change the visible structure of the expression. If no common factors are found, the expression is already in its simplest form, even if it looks complex. Thus, stating that a lack of common factors in the numerator and denominator makes the final answer incorrect is a misconception. In many cases, the factored form is the final, simplest form.
